Christchurch, a city of hope

טוב, אז אחרי יומיים שבהם לא ראינו אחד את השני בגלל השעות השונות של השינה והעירות, מצאנו את עצמנו ביום השלישי בבוקר ערים כולם. מיד ניצלנו את הרגע ויצאנו לראות איפה אנחנו נמצאים. קרייסטצ'רץ' היא העיר השנייה בגודלה בניו זילנד ובירת האי הדרומי. לעיר היה מרכז אורבאני ותרבותי עשיר מאד שהתפתח סביב הקתדרלה הגדולה. לפני שנתיים, רעדה האדמה והרסה חלקים ממערב העיר. רעידת האדמה היתה בשעת בוקר מוקדמת ואנשים היו עדיין בבתיהם ולכן נמנע אסון גדול. אנשי העיר התגייסו מיד לעזרת השכונות שנפגעו וגייסו עזרה מרחבי המדינה. ואז זה קרה שוב. הפעם המוקד היה קרוב למרכז העיר ומאד קרוב לפני השטח, ובשעת צהריים עמוסה. רבים נהרגו ומרכז העיר נהרס לחלוטין. היום המרכז האורבאני נפוץ לכל הפרברים ומרכז העיר הוא איזור הבניה הגדול ביותר בעולם. כל איזור מרכז העיר מוקף בגדרות והכניסה אליו אסורה, מלבד רחוב אחד שמוביל לקתדרלה. התחלנו בסיור מסביב לאזור ההרוס:

Well, after two days in which we didn't see each other because some of us were sleeping at any given moment (a severe case of jet lag), we found ourselves in the morning of the third day all awake. We decided to go out and see where we are. Christchurch is the second largest city in New Zealand and the capital of the south island. The city had a rich urban and cultural center which developed around the main Cathedral. Two years ago, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the city and destroyed parts of the western neighborhoods. Because of the early morning time, there were no injuries. The city residents helped rebuild the places that were hit. And then it happened again. This time it happened at lunch hour, very close to the city center and closer to the surface. Many were killed and the city center was completely devastated. Today, the urban center moved to the suburbs and the city center is the biggest demolition site in the world. We started our tour around the city center:

The kiwis (New Zealanders) are naturally optimistic people. In parallel to recruiting volunteers and money for reconstructing the city they started an effort to revive the city center by opening an open mall. To speed up the construction they brought containers, colored them with bright colors and opened shops and restaurants there. Them gave it the symbolic name Re:Start:

בהיותה קרובה לקוטב הדרומי, קרייסטצ'רץ' מרכזת את התוכנית למחקר אנטארקטי של ארצות הברית, איטליה, אנגליה וניו זילנד. מכאן יוצאות המשלחות ומטוסי האספקה הקבועים לקוטב הדרומי. בצמוד לתוכנית האנטארקטית, הוקם מוזיאון שבא להסביר את התנאים השוררים בקוטב, הקשיים והפתרונות שהיו בשימוש על ידי המשלחות השונות וסרטי טבע מופלאים. המוזיאון בנוי כך שאפשר לגעת ולשחק כמעט עם כל המוצגים. יש הדגמה חיה של סערת שלג (קר מידי וחשוך לפי התיאור של נבו) ונסיעה ברכב שלג על מסלול מיוחד שמדגים את כל היכולות שלו (נסיעה בזוויות מטורפות, מעל תהומות ובתוך מים עמוקים) – מפחיד קלות אבל שווה:

Because its proximity to Antarctica, USA, England, Italy and New Zealand run their Antarctic research program from Christchurch. The expeditions and supplies are coming out from Christchurch. Adjust to the Antarctic program is the Antarctic museum. The museum demonstrates the conditions in Antarctica, the difficulties and solutions and wonderful nature documentaries. The museum is built for children to touch everything, a real storm demonstration (too cold and too dark as Nevo described it) and the best course for snow-mobil ever.

עוד פעילות מקובלת מאד בעיר היא שייט על נהר האבון לאורך הגנים הבוטניים. לקחנו קאנו משפחתי והאכלנו את הברווזים בשאריות לחם. רק אלה לא הבינה את הרעיון ואכלה את הלחם שהוגש לה פני שזרקה אותו לנהר אחרי שהברווזים כבר עזבו:

Another common activity is "Panting" on the Avon River. We took a family canoe and paddled through the botanical gardens. We fed the ducks along the way with bread crumbs (well, Ella didn't get it and ate the bread):

בערבגפן ושקד לקחו את יריב לראות את "ההוביט" בתלת מימד. מאחר והג'ט לג עדיין לא הסתדר, יריב נרדם אבל דווקא הילדים נשארו ערים לאורך כל שלושת השעות של הסרט.

In the evening Yariv took Geffen and Shaked to see "The Hobbit" but because of the jet lag (and only because of that), he fell asleep. Geffen and Shaked made it to the end and were very excited about it.
