הקטלינס, סוף העולם, שמאלה - The Catlins, very close to the end of the world

קראנו בכמה בלוגים שאיזור הקטלינס (Catlins) (האיזור הדרומי ביותר באי הדרומי) הוא המקום היפה ביותר ואפילו אם יש זמן קצר בניו זילנד, צריך להגיע לשם. אז הגענו לקטלינס עם ציפיות גבוהות מאד. הקטלינס מאופינים בגבעות ירוקות מעובדות ויערות גשם אין סופיים על חופי האוקינוס שם חיים להם יצורי ים שונים: כלבי ים, אריות ים, פיגוינים ודולפינים. קליטה בסלולרי, לעומת זאת, אין שם, ולכן גם לא אינטרנט (מאחר ואנחנו מחוברים לאינטרנט דרך חבילת גלישה סלולרית של טלקום ניו זילנד).

We have read in a few blogs about the Catlins (the southern-most point of the south island) that stated that it is the most amazing part of NZ and even if you only have a short time you should go there. Naturally we started with very high expectations. The Catlins have rolling green hills and endless rain forests on the shores of the Pacific ocean where one can find various marine animals: seals, sea lions, penguins and dolphins. Cellular reception, however, is not abundant, and therefore no internet as well (since we are connected to the web via a Telecom NZ data plan).

התחלנו את הביקור בנסיעה דרומה לאורך החוף. מיותר לציין שמזג האויר לא שיחק לטובתנו והיה קר מאד עם רוח חזקה ביותר באיזור הים. על הנקודה הראשונה, קקה פוינט (Kaka point), עברנו ברפרוף, למרות השם המושך. זה בסה"כ חוף רגיל כך שאם מזג האוויר לא מתאים לשחיה אין הרבה לעשות שם. בנאגט פוינט (Nugget point), לעומת זאת, יש כמה תצפיות דרמטיות של החופים הסלעיים המנוקדים בכלבי ים וכלבי ים פרוותיים, וגולת הכותרת היא המגדלור המשקיף למפרץ מרשים עם סלעים בגדלים שונים פזורים במים באלגנטיות – אלה ה"נאגטס" (גושים קטנים). סלעית נשארה בקרוואן עם הקטנים אחרי שאלה התחילה לרעוד ולהכחיל. בדרך למגדלור עוברים על "סכין", שביל צר כשהצוקים נופלים משני הצדדים. זה כמובן זמן מעולה בשביל גפן ושקד לריב, אבל הצלחתי לנהל את המשבר בלי אף ילד נופל מצוק. עד שחזרנו לקראוון (משהו כמו 25 דקות) מזג האוויר התחלף מגשם ורוח לשמש בלי רוח, ושוב גשם וקר, ושוב שמש וחם, ושוב גשם (דוגמא קיצונית במיוחד למזג האויר ההפכפך בניו זילנד). מצאנו את הג'יאוקאש במגדלור והרווחנו את כוס התה החמה שחיכתה לנו בקרוואן.

את כלבי הים ראינו מלמעלה אבל את הפינגווין צהוב העין עדיין לא ראינו (מוטיב שחוזר על עצמו מאז אואמרו).

We started the tour in a drive south on the sea shore. The weather of course did not work out for us and it was freezing cold with high wind. We drove through the first point – Kaka point – which is a nice beach to swim in. We stopped in Nugget Point to see some amazing lookouts on the oceans and seals and fur seals. The highlight is a lighthouse on the edge of a cliff overlooking rock formations in the water below (the "Nuggets"). Salit stayed in the RV with the two little ones after Ella turned blue from the freezing wind and Yariv walked with the Geffen and Shaked to see the lighthouse. Of course the best time to pick up a fight between them is when they walked on the edge with steep drops on both sides. Yariv managed to reach the lighthouse without losing any kid, found the geocache and they all came back to drink hot tea in the RV.

We saw the seals from the top but could not see any Yellow-eyed penguin (a repeating motif in the last week).

המשכנו לכיוון מפלי פורקנוי (Purakanui Falls), הראשון בסדרה של מפלים שתכננו לראות. תוך כדי נסיעה הגשם התחזק והפך לברד ואנחנו לא היינו בטוחים שזה בדיוק הזמן המתאים ללכת לראות מפלים. המשכנו למרות זאת וכשהגענו לחניה, התבהרו השמיים והשמש הפציעה. לא סמכנו על השמש שתישאר אז הצטיידנו במעילי גשם ויצאנו למפלים. הדרך עוברת ביער גשם קסום עם שרכי ענק ועצים שאנחנו לא מכירים. הכל ירוק ומכוסה טחב. המפל עצמו געש מרוב מים שהתחזקו בעקבות הגשם.

We continued to Purakanui Falls, the first in a series of waterfalls we planned to see. On the way the rain turned into hail and we weren't sure that this is the right time to walk to the waterfall. When we parked the car, however, the sun came out. We put on our rain jackets, just in case, and went out.  The track goes through a magical rain forest with giant ferns and all kind of trees that we didn't recognize. Everything is green and covered with moss. The waterfall was full of water from the rain.

רצינו למצוא גם מקום שנקרא "Jack's Blowhole" שזה מעין בור ענקי שנוצר באדמה (קצת דומה לבולענים של ים המלח, רק הרבה יותר גדול) אבל הגשם שחזר והשעה המאוחרת הבריחו אותנו לאתר הקרוואנים הקרוב שהיה בסיסי ביותר למרות המלצה חמה בלונלי פלנט ובאחד הבלוגים מ-2008. אנחנו מבססים הרבה מהמסלול, האטרקציות ומקומות הלינה שלנו גם על כמה בלוגים מוצלחים, בעיקר של שתי משפחות ישראליות שטיילו כאן, משפחת וייס ב-2008 ולוגאשי ב-2010 (הדס, אלה ה"רנצ'י" וה"רונית בין" של ניו זילנד...). מלבד הבלוגים בעברית ובאנגלית יש כמובן את הלונלי פלנט המיתולוגי (מעניין אם פעם יהיו סיורים בעקבות הלונלי פלנט כמו שיש סיורים בעקבות שר הטבעות. זה בכלל הגיוני?) וה-Trip Advisor עם כל בעיות האמינות המובנות שלו.

We planned to go to "Jack's Blowhole" that is a huge sinkhole in the ground, but because of the rain that came back and the hour, we found the nearest camping ground that was very basic, despite being warmly recommended on Lonely Planet and in one of the blogs from 2008. We are basing a lot of the route planning, attractions, and accommodation also on a few well-written blogs, mostly of two Israeli families that traveled here in 2008 and 2010. Besides the blogs in Hebrew and English there are of course the mythological Lonely Planet and the Trip Advisor, despite its build-in reliability problems.

למחרת זרחה השמש ויצאנו לראות את הקטלינס בהדרם. התחלנו במפלי מתאי (אחרי שיריב שחק את הבדיחה "מתי פורים?") ופרסת הסוס (Matai and Horseshoe falls). הדרך למפלים עוברת (איך לא?) ביער גשם קסום. מצאנו קאש במפל הפרסה – חייבים אולי לציין כאן בעיניין הקאשים – יחסית מאד מושקעים. ברוב הקאשים יש תיבת אוצר עם מתנות מה שהופך את החיפוש ליותר כיף לילדים.

The next morning was warm and sunny so we went out to see the Catlins in the sunlight. We started with Matai and Horseshoe waterfalls. The track to the falls goes through (of course) a magical rain forest. We found the geocache in the Horseshoe waterfall (the Kiwis put many items in these little boxes so the kids enjoy finding them as well).

בדרך למערות הקתדרלה עצרנו לארוחת צהרים בתצפית על חוף הים אבל הרוח הבריחה אותנו בחזרה לקרוואן לאכול. נוף-נוף אבל תנו לנו לאכול את הפשטידת בשר שלנו בשקט. ארוחת צהריים בטיול, לפחות מחוץ לעיר גדולה, מורכבת מלחם, ממרחים שונים (שמטעמי כשרות לא נפרטם), עגבניות (אובססיה של יריב), ולפעמים גם שאריות מארוחת הערב של אתמול או פאי בשר שאפשר לקנות בכל מקום חם (לאכילה מיד) או קר. אחרי כמה נסיונות הילדים הכי אוהבים את פאי הבקר הטחון (Mince Pie).  

On our way to the Cathedral caves we stopped for lunch in a beautiful lookout on the beach but the wind scared us off and we had lunch inside the RV. Great view but let us have our meat pie quietly. Lunch on the trip, at least outside town, is usually composed of bread, various spreads, tomatoes (Yariv's obsession), and sometimes also leftovers from last night's dinner or meat pie which you can buy here practically everywhere either hot (ready to eat) or refrigerated. After several attempts, the kids love best the Mince Pie.

מערות הקתדרלה נוצרו משחיקה של המים את הסלע על החוף. המערות הן ענקיות ואפשר להכנס באחת ולצאת בשניה. מי הים נכנסים למערות וניתן להגיע אליהן רק בשעת השפל. תאמנו את שעת ההגעה לשעה לפני השפל המלא ובאפן מפתיע הגענו בזמן. הדרך לחוף יורדת דרך (מי מנחש?) יער גשם קסום! כשהגענו למטה הורדנו כולנו סנדלים והלכנו יחפים על החוף. מזג האויר היה חמים ונעים והשמש זרחה (מזל גדול). את המערות עברנו מצד אחד לצד השני והפוך. הילדים נהנו מאד מהמים והחול והשמש. כולם נרטבו ברמה כזאת או אחרת רק נבו נשאר יבש (כי הוא היה זהיר). לאלה החלפנו בגדים על החוף אבל לגפן ושקד לא היו בגדים להחלפה ולכן הם נאלצו ללכת עם מעילי הגשם של אבא ואמא שיסתירו את התחתונים. לקח לנו בערך עשר דקות רק להוריד משקד את הסקיני ג'ינס הרטובים שהיא לבשה. היה כיף גדול.

Cathedral caves were created by the force of the sea water on the beach rock. The caves are very high (hence the name) and you can go inside one cave and come out from the second. The ocean water flood the caves so they are open to the public only in low tide. We arranged our time so we will be there one hour before the low tide and surprising enough we made it on time. The track to the beach goes through (you guessed it) a magical rain forest. When we finally found the beach we all took our sandals off and enjoyed the send below our feet. The weather was warm and the sun was shining (lucky us). We explored the caves one way and the other, the kids loved the water and the sand and the sun. All the kids except to Nevo were soaked wet at the end. We had a set dry cloths to Ella but didn't have any of Geffen or Shaked. So they had to ware mom and dad's rain jackets so no one will see them in underwares. It took us about ten minutes to peel off Shaked's wet skinny jeans. We had fun there.

המשכנו למפלי מקלין (McLean's Falls) ושוב יער גשם קסום ומפלים גדולים ומרשימים. בשלב זה כבר די מיצינו את המוטיב החוזר הזה. הדבר השונה היה הצבע של המים. המים היו בצבע אדום חזק, קצת מזכיר צבע של תה (לילדים היו דימויים יותר צבעוניים).

Next we walked to McLean's Falls, and again a magical rain forest and powerful waterfalls. By now we felt like we saw enough of these. The difference here was the color of the water. It was reddish, a little bit like tea (the kids had more colorful metaphors).

נסענו הלאה לקיוריו ביי (Curio Bay) כדי לצפות בדולפינים ובפינגווינים צהובי עין וגם לישון בקמפינג היחיד באזור. קיבלנו את המיקום האחרון בקמפינג ורצנו לחוף לצפות בפינגווינים. אחרי שבוע שאנחנו רודפים אחרי הפינגווין צהוב העין בכל חוף אפשרי ומאחורי כל מחסה, ראינו קבוצה גדולה שלהם במרחק נגיעה מאיתנו. היינו בעננים. לפעמים צריך לרדוף אחרי משהו הרבה כדי להעריך את החוויה.

We drove to Curio Bay to watch some dolphins and Yellow-eyed penguins and to sleep in the only camping ground around there. We received the last spot available and run to the beach to watch the penguins. Finally after a week we've been chasing these rare penguins on every beach and behind every shelter, we saw about seven of them so close we could almost touch them. Sometimes you have to wait for something to appreciate your experience.

אתר הקרוואנים תוייג מיד כאתר הגרוע ביותר בו שהינו (היה עדיף לעשות חניית חופש בטבע  במקרה הזה). אחרי שיריב הלך למקלחת עם כל הילדים, הם חזרו והזהירו אותי לא להתקרב (גפן שאל אותי בעיניים דואגות "תגיד, אבא, ככה נראות המקלחות בצבא?". הבטחתי לו שלא.). ניסינו שוב את חימום המים למקלחת בקרוואן והפעם הצלחנו!

The camping site was tagged worst of all in our trip (we should have use the freedom parking in this case). Yariv took the kids to the showers; they came back and warned me not to use the showers. We tried again heating the water and this time it worked!

ביומנו השלישי בקטלינס נסענו לסוף העולם. זוהי הנקודה הדרומית ביותר באי הדרומי. אלה נרדמה באוטו ולכן רק סלעית ושלושת הגדולים הלכו להצטלם ליד השלט שמראה שכאן אנחנו קרובים יותר לקוטב הדרומי מאשר לקו המשווה. בחזרה לקרוואן פתאום קיבלנו אות קליטה קטן בסלולרי אחרי שלושה ימים בהם היינו מנותקים לחלוטין מהעולם. מה הדבר הראשון שעושים? בודקים אם יש קאש בסביבה, ואכן היה ואפילו מאד קרוב לקרוואן.

In our third and last day of the Catlins, we drove to the end of the world. It is the most southern point of the south island. Ella slept in the car so Salit took the three kids to the post that point to the south pole on one side and the equator on the other side. Back in the RV we found a single bar of cellular receiving in the phone after three days we were completely disconnected from the world. What is the first thing you do? Check if there are any geocaches around. There was one very close to the RV.

נסענו לעוד מגדלור אחד כדי למצות גם את החויה הזאת ומצאנו לידו עצים יפים שהילדים מאד נהנו לטפס עליהם.

We went to see one last lighthouse and found some great trees to climb.

  

לסיכום ניתן להגיד שאיזור הקטלינס הוא חביב אבל הוא קצת מוערך יתר על המידה. הנוף הדרמטי של איזור הפיורדים (עליו נספר בפוסט הבא) עונה טוב יותר להגדרה של "אסור לפספס".  

To summarize, we felt the Catlins are nice but a bit overrated. The very dramatic views of Fjordland (coming up in our next post) fall better into the "must see" spot.

דנידין וחצי האי אוטאגו - Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula

באמצע דנידין יש מקום מיוחד שם אפשר לעמוד ולהריח שוקולד... מפעל השוקולד "קדברי". אמנם אניני טעם בשוקולד לא ממש מחשיבים את השוקולד הבריטי "קדברי" כשוקולד משובח – מין שוקולד מתוק מדי ושמן מדי עם פחות מדי קקאו, כמו "ממתקי מוטי" לפני שנות דור – אבל בינינו ילדים הם לא ממש אניני טעם בשוקולד.

In the middle of Dunedin there's a special place where you can stand in the street and smell… Chocolate! It's true that chocolate experts don't really consider the British chocolate "Cadbury" a fine chocolate – somewhat too sweet and too creamy with too little cocoa – but, hey, kids are not really chocolate experts.

הדרך לדנידין עוברת על חוף הים. בדרך ראינו דוכן ירקות ופירות לא מאויש שבו אתה אמור לקחת מה שאתה רוצה ולהשאיר כסף בתיבה. היינו כל כך המומים שסומכים על אנשים ככה שהיינו חייבים לצלם וגם השארנו את הסכום המדויק אחרי שלקחנו שלל פירות וירקות העונה כולל עגבניות מתוקות במיוחד.

The way to Dunedin passes on the coast. On the way we saw an unmanned fruit and vegetable stand, where you're supposed to take what you want and leave money in the box. We were so amazed that people trust you this way that we had to take a picture AND we left the exact sum after taking a selection of the season's fruits and veggies including extra sweet tomatoes.

דוכן פירות וירקות על הדרך

עצרנו סתם באמצע הדרך להתרשם מהחוף. הילדים אספו צדפים וחיפשו צדפות פאווה, גפן כמובן נכנס למים (הקפואים!!!) ויריב חיפש קאשים בפחות ויותר הצלחה. צדפות פאווה הן צדפות גדולות וצבעוניות שמצויות ברבים מחופי ניו זילנד. הן ערך טבע מוגן, בערך. כלומר, מותר לאסוף מהחוף צדפות פאווה אבל לכל היותר 8 צדפות ביום. בחופים התיירותיים שבהם היינו היו צדפות כאלה אבל לא מרשימות במיוחד. בשביל צדפות יפות וגדולות במיוחד צריך להרחיק לחופים הנידחים יותר או לשלם משהו כמו 12 דולר לצדפה בחנות מזכרות.

We stopped on the way to take a look at the beach. The kids collected shells and looked for Paua shells, Geffen of course went into the freezing water, and Yariv looked for cache with a medium level of success. Paua Shells are large colorful shells which can be found in many NZ beaches. They are protected, sort of. Meaning, you can collect Paua shells from the beach but at most 8 per day. The touristic beaches we visited had such shells but not very impressive. For the nice and big ones you need to go far to remote beaches or pay 12 dollars per shell at a gift shop.

משם המשכנו לסלעי מוארקי (Moeraki Boulders) שהם מעין סלעים עגולים לגמרי שזרוקים על החוף בקטע אחד קטן של החוף. כמובן שיש על זה אגדה מאורית. הילדים כבר פיתחו יכולת להמציא אגדות מאוריות בעצמם, זה לא כל כך קשה: קח איזה אל או שניים, סירה, מישהו כועס על משהו והשאר כבר זורם מעצמו. בכל מקרה, קצת שיחקנו על הסלעים אבל הקור הבריח אותנו לקפה ושוקו בבית הקפה הסמוך.

From there we continued to the Moeraki Boulders which are completely round boulders scattered on the beach in a small area. Of course there's a Maori legend about this. The kids already developed an ability to invent Maori legends by themselves, it's not hard: Take a god or two, a boat, someone is angry at something, and the rest just flows from that. In any case, we played on the boulders until the cold drove us away to the adjacent Café for coffee and hot chocolate.

בסופו של דבר עצרנו בנקודה אחרונה בתוך הכפר מוארקי הסמוך בה ראינו מושבה ענקית של כלבי ים.

Finally, we stopped at a last point (Moeraki Village) where we saw a huge seal colony.

משם הגענו לדנידין העיר והתמקמנו באתר קרוואנים קטן שהמליץ לנו עליו זוג קנדי שפגשנו באקרואה. האתר מאד ביתי וחביב (Leith Valley Holiday Park). דנידין עצמה היא עיר נחמדה, ממוצא סקוטי ("דנידין" הוא שמה הסקוטי של אדינבורו) בפתח חצי האי אוטאגו לחופי האוקיינוס השקט.

We arrived at Dunedin at a small camping site recommended by a Canadian couple we met in Akaroa. The place is very cozy and pleasant (Leith Valley Holiday Park). Dunedin itself is a nice city, of a Scottish origin ("Dunedin" is Edinborough's Scottish name) at the mouth of the Otago Peninsula on the Pacific coastline.

התחלנו בטיול בחצי האי אוטאגו. במקום הגבוה בחצי האי עומדת טירה (היחידה בניו זילנד) עם גנים חביבים בעלי מוטיב חזק של עליסה בארץ הפלאות ותצפיות מרשימות למפרץ.

We started touring the Otago Peninsula. In the tallest point on the Peninsula a castle stands, the only one in New Zealand, with nice botanic gardens with a strong motif of Alice in Wonderland and impressive panoramas to the bay.

משם המשכנו לאורך החופים (נהיגה מפחידה קצת על כבישי עפר או ממש על קו המים ללא מעקה בטיחות). ניסינו למצוא כלבי ים או אריות ים בחוף "אלנס" (Allans Beach) אבל לשווא (מצאנו רק כבשים), אז נסענו לקצה חצי האי, שם התמקמה לה להקה של אלבטרוסים, עוף מרשים בעל מוטת כנפיים של 3 מטרים. את פנינו קיבלו שם מאות רבות של שחפים שרבצו בכל פינה וחגו באוויר בצרחות מקפיאות דם ומחרישות אזניים, במחווה ציפורית להיצ'קוק. ביניהם השתלבו 2-3 אלבטורוסים ענקיים והתיירים החליפו ביניהם רשמים והסברים לגבי איך להבדיל בין שחף לאלבטרוס. בין מאות השחפים על הקרקע היו גם כמה שחפים מתים. פגשנו את עובדת המקום שנפלה בחלקה הזכות לאסוף את השחפים המתים. היא הסבירה לנו שהם הולכים מכות ולפעמים פשוט הורגים אחד את השני אבל התיירים לא אוהבים לראות את זה אז הם אוספים את הגופות מדי פעם. הפעם, היא סיפרה לנו, מניין הגופות (body count) הוא 3. (רק לי הקטע האחרון עושה אסוציאציה של כתבה של קירשנבאום?)

We continued along the shore (slightly scary driving on unpaved roads or next to the water without a security fence). We tried to find seals or sea lions in Allans Beach but in vain (found only sheep), so we drive to the tip of the peninsula where a colony of Albatrosses found a home. The Albatross is an impressive bird with a 3 meter wing span. We were welcomed by hundreds of seagulls lying everywhere and  circling through the air with terrifying loud yells, in an aviary tribute to Hitchcock. Among them, there were also 2-3 huge albatrosses and the tourists exchanged explanations about how to tell an albatross from a seagull.

בחוף ממול פגשנו כלב ים באופן אישי. השתדלנו לשמור ממנו מרחק בטחון של 10 מטרים לפי ההוראות חוץ מגפן ואלה שהגיעו קרוב יותר אליו (שניהם בגיל שבו אתה לא ממש מכבד גבולות וכללים).

In the beach on the other side we met a seal up close and personal. We kept a safe distance of 10 meters according to the rules expect Geffen and Ella which approached closed – they are both at ages in which you don't really respect rules and boundaries.

חזרנו לקמפינג החביב שלנו בזמן לגשם הערב (כל הימים האחרונים דפוס מזג האויר דומה: קר כל היום ולפנות ערב מתחיל גשם עד הבוקר) ולארוחת ערב דשנה.

בסוף היום של השוקולד והעיר דנידין קיווינו לנסוע לנקודת תצפית יפה על העיר והמפרץ ("סיגנל היל") אבל כאמור הגשם הגיע בזמן אז בילינו בקמפינג.

We went back to our nice campground in time for the evening rain (all last days display the same weather pattern: Cold all day and in late afternoon it starts to rain until the next morning) and a hearty dinner.

At the end of the chocolate and town day we hoped to have dinned at a nice lookout on the city and bay ("Signal Hill") but the rain came on time to keep us at bay.

למחרת בבוקר קינחנו את הטיול בדנידין ב"טרק" קטן ברחוב בולדווין, הרחוב הכי תלול בעולם (שיא גינס). עלינו כולנו בלי בעיה, עד הסוף, כולל נבו, סלעית עם הברכיים, ואלה על הגב של אבא מעודדת אותו מהיציע. הגדילה לעשות מכולם שקדי שעשתה גלגלון במעלה הרחוב!

The next morning we finalized the Dunedin visit with a small "trek" up the Baldwin street, the world's steepest street (Guinness record and yes, it is steeper than SF). We all went up, including Nevo, Salit with her knees, and Ella on dad's back cheering from the balcony. Shaked was the main hero, doing a cartwheel up the street!
